5:14 PM â Friday
The Oval Office
Washington D.C.
The President walked into the Oval Office and threw the file about logging in western states down onto his desk. It was Friday and he was looking forward to the weekend, a weekend filled with golf and little else, and especially not the bullshit and rancor from the Hill.
The Impeachment vote had fizzled out as a fissure opened up in the Republican Party. All itâd taken was one stupid comment from a Republican running in a Midwestern state about rape and women. Now a prize-nominee was dropping out of the race and the whole balance of power in the Senate was set to shift in 2015. The votes hadnât been there and the will had eroded. Increased violence in Iraq had also convinced enough people that the Bergdahl prisoner release was the right thing, and they were grateful to be out of foreign affairs. To top it all off, word had come in that a small Special Forces operation led by the French and assisted by the Americans had finally freed the 276 Nigerian girls that had been for more than three months in captivity. Whatâs more, gruesome video had appeared on YouTube, and it appeared to be authentic. While the faces of the three westerners had been blotted out, the face of Shekau was unmistakable, and his painful fate as well.
Itâd all meant higher than expected approval ratings, and that going into the Congressional recess. The President had the momentum, and he knew it. Life was good.
The door to the office opened suddenly and barking could be heard. The President turned around to see one of his daughters, as well as the First Dog, run into the office.
âHow was school?â he asked.
âFine,â his daughter said.
The President frowned. Running the free world certainly wasnât the hardest job out there.
âWell, this weekend I was thinking about going toââ
âWhatâs that?â
The President looked to where his daughter was pointing. There on the side of his desk was a small box, the French seal clearly displayed. He wondered why he hadnât noticed it earlier.
âMaybe itâsââ
âIâll get it!â the President said as he raced to the desk and got his hand on the box before his daughter could.
âI want to see!â
The President ignored her protests, and took the small lid off the box. Inside was a smaller box, and with a note atop it.
âWhatâs it say?â
The President frowned. âShouldnât you be doing homework?â
âDad, itâs summer!â
The President frowned again, then turned his eyes back to the note.
Weâre sorry Murray couldnât make it, but he was adamant you have these.
